Sonder

Rethinking artist discovery: curated setcards for independent musicians — without algorithms, charts, or like-driven visibility.

Problem

Independent musicians often disappear inside algorithms, playlists, streaming statistics, and short-term attention metrics. It is difficult to understand who is behind a track, what an artist has already released, and which creative context their work belongs to. Profiles, releases, biographies, platform links, and references are scattered across different services, making discovery fragmented and often superficial.

Solution

SONDER is a concept for a curated artist-discovery stage. Each artist receives a professionally designed setcard, inspired by the format used in the modeling industry. The setcard brings together portrait, key data, work overview, biography, discography, platform links, setup, gear, genre context, and related artists in one consistent format. SONDER is not a streaming platform. It is the curated layer before the stream: a structured, respectful, and context-rich entry point into the person and the work behind the music.

Target audience

SONDER is designed for independent musicians, bookers, labels, journalists, and fans who want to discover artists beyond streaming charts and algorithmic recommendations. It is also intended for artists who want to present their work in a professional, curated, and context-driven format.

Roadmap

1. Closed Beta Test
Launch with selected artists from the network to test quality, format, and editorial curation.

2. Setcard Iteration
Refine the layout based on feedback around biography, discography, key data, streaming links, setup, gear, and related artists.

3. Dashboard Expansion
Improve the artist overview, track management, metadata editing, and profile-completeness features.

4. Verification Workflow
Develop onboarding and verification flows to maintain curated quality and profile authenticity.

5. Open Onboarding Phase
Gradually open the concept to more artists once the format, quality control, and workflow have been validated.

Setcard format

The setcard comes from the modelling industry: a compact card with portrait, key facts and work selection. Sonder transfers the format to independent musicians — as a counterpoint to algorithmic playlist logic.

Case Study

Overview SONDER is a Rebel Media Network concept for a new approach to artist discovery. The core idea is to make independent musicians visible through curated, professionally designed artist setcards, rather than through algorithms, charts, or like-based metrics. The concept transfers the setcard principle from the modeling industry to the music industry. Each artist receives a compact, visual, and structured profile page that brings together identity, works, creative context, and listening links. SONDER is currently a concept and early prototype, not a finished product. Initial Situation The digital music landscape is dominated by streaming platforms, playlists, algorithmic recommendations, and short-term performance metrics. For independent artists, this creates a visibility problem: music may be available, but the person, creative background, and broader body of work often remain invisible. Important information is scattered across multiple platforms: biography, discography, links, visual identity, references, and context. This makes informed discovery difficult for bookers, labels, journalists, and fans. Challenge The challenge is to give independent artists a stage that does more than a streaming profile. SONDER is not intended to simply play music. It is intended to create orientation, context, and understanding. The format needs to: present artists professionally and visually combine music, biography, works, and context function without likes, rankings, or chart mechanics be quickly understandable for fans, media, bookers, and labels support curated quality rather than mass visibility Concept SONDER introduces the artist setcard as its central format. Each setcard acts as a curated overview of an artist, combining visual identity, key data, music, platform links, genre context, setup, gear, and related artists. SONDER is not designed as a streaming platform. It acts as a discovery layer before the stream, helping users understand an artist before moving to Spotify, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, or other platforms. Solution The solution is a curated digital profile system for independent musicians. Instead of offering another social profile or streaming page, SONDER provides a structured artist presentation with editorial character. The setcard makes visible: who the artist is which tracks and releases exist which musical direction the artist follows which platforms and links are relevant which setup or gear is used which related artists or influences exist how complete and professional the profile is This creates value for both artists and discoverers. Artists receive a high-quality presentation surface, while bookers, labels, media professionals, and fans can understand an artist’s relevance more quickly. Target Audience SONDER is designed for independent musicians who want to present their work in a more professional and context-rich way. At the same time, the concept addresses people and organizations that discover, curate, book, or recommend artists. The target audience includes: independent artists producers and musicians bookers and event organizers labels and A&Rs music journalists curators fans looking for music beyond algorithmic feeds Benefits For artists, SONDER offers a compact, high-quality, and curated presentation format. Instead of sharing many separate links, they can present their work through one central setcard. For bookers, labels, and media professionals, SONDER provides a fast overview that offers more context than a single streaming link. For fans, the concept creates a calmer and more intentional entry point into music discovery, without ranking pressure, likes, or algorithmic noise. Roadmap Phase 1 — Concept and Prototype Define the setcard format, create first example profiles, and develop the visual foundation. Phase 2 — Closed Beta Test the concept with selected artists from the network to validate the format, content structure, and editorial quality. Phase 3 — Dashboard and Profile Management Expand functions for managing artist data, tracks, links, discography, biography, setup, gear, and profile completeness. Phase 4 — Verification and Curation Develop onboarding and verification workflows to maintain curated quality and prevent SONDER from becoming an unfiltered mass platform. Phase 5 — Expansion Gradually open the concept to more artists, partners, and potential editorial formats. Conclusion SONDER positions itself as an alternative to purely algorithmic music discovery. The concept does not place plays, likes, or charts at the center, but artists, context, and curated visibility. As a prototype, SONDER shows how independent artists could be presented and discovered in a more professional way — not as another streaming service, but as a visual, structured, and editorial stage before the stream.
